In this workshop, we dive into the realm of our inner Demons — the hidden, rejected and often misunderstood parts of ourselves — and use them to create complex, authentic characters for screen and stage.
This work will challenge our ideas about who we think we are, what drives us, and what we are willing to use as artists.
DEMONS is a method I have developed and tested over forty years as an actor and director, and through my work with actors. It builds on the principles of Stanislavski, has its heart in the Chubbuck Technique, and draws on Carl Jung's analytical psychology.
We work with contemporary and classical scenes from film, television and theatre. And our Demons will help us do it.
You don't arrive at the workshop and simply start working. The process begins three weeks beforehand, when you receive your scene and scene partner. Two weeks before the workshop, you'll receive a video with exercises to begin the work. A few days before we meet in Berlin, you and your scene partner will have a 45-minute online session with me, where we'll explore the basic drives within your scene — and within yourself.
Then we meet for three intensive days at the Chubbuck Studio in Berlin. You'll meet one or more of your Demons, give them a name and a life, and enlist their help to play your scene and get what you want.
The work is analytical, emotional, physical and intuitive, engaging the full range of your abilities as an actor. It can be challenging at times. But more importantly, it is deeply creative. You may leave with a very different relationship to the parts of yourself you once thought you had to hide.
We don't get rid of our Demons. We put them to work.
Working with the Demons
The Demon is a figure found in nearly every culture around the world. In Jungian psychology, a closely related idea is the Shadow: the part of the unconscious that we have rejected, denied or disowned, yet which continues to influence our behaviour and reactions.
We often think of our Demons as negative qualities: shame, fear, envy, rage, vulnerability, desire. But our Demons can also be qualities we find difficult to accept in ourselves — power, ambition, sensuality, confidence, even joy.
A Demon can be anything in us that we have learned to push away, hide or control. And that is precisely why it can be such a powerful source of energy for an actor. When we connect with our Demons, we can unlock creativity, break through artistic blocks and discover impulses that are often far more interesting than the version of ourselves we normally present to the world.
The aim is not to tame the Demon, but to make it useful — to turn what we once rejected into something that can help us win. Like turning lead into gold.
The Course Process
Prepare
Three weeks before the workshop, you'll receive an email with your assigned scene and scene partner. You'll watch the film or television series, or read the play, and begin working with the material. You'll also receive a selection of texts and exercises to help you prepare. Please take the time to engage deeply with them. The more you bring to the process, the further we can take it together in Berlin.
Explore
Two weeks before the workshop, you'll receive a video with exercises to begin exploring the material — both the scene and yourself.
A few days before we meet in Berlin, you and your scene partner will have a 45-minute online session with me. We'll work with scene analysis, inner drives and given circumstances, and explore how they connect to you as an actor. We'll draw on Stanislavski, the 12 Steps of the Chubbuck Technique, and other contemporary acting approaches.
Meet your Demon
Finally, we meet at the Chubbuck Studio in Berlin for three days of concentrated work. Together, we'll discover, reveal and integrate our Demons — not as something to overcome, but as a source of power for the actor. You'll give your Demon a name. You'll discover what it wants, what it fears and what it can do for you — and your adversary becomes your creative ally.
The working language of the course is English.
